Each scholarship recipient is matched with an adult mentor who is responsible for providing guidance throughout the high school experience. The goal of each mentor is to help the young adult become the best student that he or she can be. Mentors focus on the students’ academics and extracurricular activities.
Each quarter, the Mentoring Committee sponsors sessions for students, parents and mentors to explore topics that will enhance the students’ knowledge, skills and talents, as well as provide insights into areas such as the college application processes.
The mentors maintain one-on-one contact with the students. All mentors are expected to take the Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training, a three-hour session designed for “'all personnel of the Archdiocese, i.e. priests, deacons, paid staff and volunteers who have regular contact with children and young people at the time they enter service in the name of the Church” (Archdiocese of Omaha, Child Protection Policy 4a, page 15). Training successfully completed by volunteers and employees this past year is effective for five years. Mentors ready to find the dates for sessions can access the program at http://www.archomaha.com/Pastoral/SafeEnvir/SEtraining.html.
