On April, 22, 2007 The Omaha World Herald published a special report on the economic condition of black Omahans and some of the consequences. The report stated that among America's 100 largest metro areas, Omaha has the third-highest black poverty rate.
Worse yet, its percentage of black children in poverty ranks No. 1 in the nation, with nearly six of 10 black children living below the poverty line.
One result of the World Herald article was to draw attention to the educational needs of black youth in Omaha. Since 1994, the Black Student Catholic Scholarship Fund has provided tuition assistance to academically-qualified black youth from families of limited means. So far, seventy-three students have earned scholarships to attend a local Catholic high school.
The Black Catholic Student Scholarship Fund will continue to help young men and women succeed in high school. In this way BSCSF is helping to address the condition described by the World Herald with the energy and dedication it demands.
Currently, 19 young men and women are receiving $3,500 annual scholarships. Over 95% of our students have gone on to attend college and currently three are pursuing graduate studies. In 2007, one of our recipients was awarded the Gates Scholarship for Nebraska. She was one of 1,200 students who competed for this scholarship. She is not alone in this distinction: we have had three other Gates Scholarship recipients in our program!
Won’t you be a part of the effort to provide black Omaha youth with a value-rich education?
Please consider a generous gift to help our current and future scholarship recipients not only attend high school, but more importantly, prepare for life.
Gratefully,
The Finance Committee
